FAQ

Should I do anything to prepare my space or myself for using the dye kit?

Yes, whenever using any dyes it is best to use common sense and good housekeeping. Cover work areas in plastic, work in a well-ventilated area, wear clothes you aren't afraid of getting dirty, and wear gloves and a dust mask. Remember that dyes only purpose in life is to add color to anything it touches. Read the entire safety information <HERE>.

What’s the best way to watch the magic happen?

The stickers peel off of the jar cleanly, so feel free to remove them to watch the magic unfold before your eyes. You can also leave the lid off to watch, but close it if you plan on leaving it alone to ensure safety and cleanliness.

What happens if I shake the jar?

Shaking the jar will create another unique beautiful pattern, different from the ones pictured on the jars. When shaken, the dyes will move around in the water more, providing an alternative, subtler effect. (pictured below is an amethyst majic jar shaken)

Can I leave water in the jar for more than an hour?

Yes, the color will be permanent after one hour, so it's not necessary, but if you choose to leave it longer it won't hurt the scarf, although the color and pattern may change if you leave it significantly longer.

Can I reuse the dye?

Yes, the dyes can be reused immediately afterward to dye other small, natural fiber items (cotton, silk, rayon, linen, hemp and wool). Leave your item in the dye for one hour before washing out. The color will change and fade with each use, and will be completely exhausted after a couple of hours. My book is full of instructions on tie-dye techniques!

What is the best method of care for the scarf?

Wash gentle by hand or in the machine, using a gentle or natural laundry detergent. Hot water won't hurt it but may shrink it 2-10%. Hang dry or use a machine dryer on gentle. Iron to reveal the beauty in the details, and to return the silk to it's softest self

Will each scarf be unique?

Each scarf is unique, while we strive for consistency with the dye kits, the element of surprise is what makes the kit magical.

Are the dye kits kid friendly?

The dyes and fixatives that I use are the same ones that you find in most craft store tie-dye kits. They are permanent and non-toxic, and kids should be able to enjoy using them with adult supervision.

Is the dye permanent? Will the color fade or bleed?

The dyes are permanent and won't fade or bleed after the initial excess dye is washed out. Wash it alone the first time you put it in the washing machine so it doesn't bleed on your other clothes.

Can I reuse the jar?

Please reuse this beautiful jar for non-food related purposes.

Will there be different dye kits in the future?

Our ideas are ongoing, and we welcome suggestions, so feel free to email us or tag us online with your requests!

How do I share my results with friends and others?

Please share images of your process and finished masterpieces and tag them #shabdmagic so we can all see how you make and use magic!
